Maryland Family Leave Contributions Start This Year – What You Need to Know

With required contributions to the Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) Fund starting this fall, Maryland employers should make sure employees have advance notice of the new deductions they will be seeing from their wages. While eligible employees will not be able to start drawing from the fund until January 1, 2026,  required contributions are currently scheduled to begin on October 1, 2024.

Employers Are Now Required to Use Revised Form I-9 as of November 1

As of November 1, 2023, employers must use the revised Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification. Employers enrolled in E-Verify can remotely examine identity documents using an alternative procedure, including document review, live video interaction, and proper documentation on Form I-9. 

Virginia Employers Must Now Give Leave for Organ and Bone Marrow Donation

Virginia employers with 50 or more employees must now offer job-protected leave for organ or bone marrow donation. Eligible employees, having worked for at least 12 months and 1,250 hours, can take up to 60 business days for organ donation and up to 30 days for bone marrow donation in a 12-month period.
