With four decades of experience, he serves as a trusted counselor on complex business and commercial matters throughout the Washington metropolitan region.
John understands that legal decisions are often business decisions. He works closely with clients to evaluate risk, make informed decisions, and navigate transactions and operational challenges in ways that support both their immediate objectives and long-term goals.
John represents businesses and business owners in a wide range of transactional and operational matters. His experience includes mergers and acquisitions, organizational structuring, shareholder and stock agreements, governance issues, commercial leasing, workouts, bankruptcy matters, and day-to-day business counseling. He regularly advises clients as they evaluate opportunities, manage risk, and make decisions that affect the future of their organizations.
John also has significant experience handling major real estate and nonprofit transactions. He has represented buyers and sellers in complex acquisitions and property transactions, including notable deals involving prominent Washington-area organizations. He advises nonprofit organizations on governance and operational issues, including obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status and compliance with IRS requirements.
Healthcare organizations and providers turn to John for counsel on contracts, real estate matters, and industry-specific legal issues. He has advised hospitals, healthcare providers, and healthcare-related organizations, and has served in an in-house counsel role supporting a major specialty hospital and a national healthcare trade association.
In addition to his business practice, John advises business owners, families, and nonprofit leaders on succession and estate planning. He helps clients plan for the future through wills, trusts, advance directives, family LLCs, and other strategies designed to preserve assets and support long-term goals.
When he is not advising clients, John enjoys spending time with his family and grandchildren in Florida, supporting the arts and theater, and finding time to swim and read at the beach.
