Overview

Donna Van Scoy is a Maryland family law attorney with 30 years of experience representing individuals during their separation, divorce, and post-divorce matters. She is skilled in handling negotiations, mediation, collaborative law, and litigation.

Donna practices law according to the Golden Rule, treating her clients how she would want to be treated by any professional. She believes success stems from hard work, and she is persistent and driven to achieve the best results for her clients. Donna works tirelessly with her clients so they are prepared to settle their case or, if necessary, litigate their case.

Donna represents clients in matters of separation, divorce, child custody, access, child support, alimony, marital property, asset determination and division, settlements, separation agreements, and mediation. She also handles issues of domestic violence, represents children as a Best Interest Attorney, and represents both sides in grandparents and third party custody or access issues.

A strong advocate for her clients, Donna navigates them though custody and divorce matters, including complex financial matters and high conflict custody issues. Donna educates her clients to understand and participate in their family law matter to reach a fair settlement protecting their rights and interests. She is experienced in working with other professionals and experts on behalf of her clients, which may be necessary in custody or financial matters. Donna appreciates and understands the emotional and financial stresses divorcing families face, and she works with her clients and the opposing side to be open to creative and practicable settlements. However, if necessary, she is prepared to go to court.

Donna is a highly regarded member of the family law bar. Since 2007, she has regularly been selected by Best Lawyers, Washingtonian, Super Lawyers, and Bethesda Magazine as a top family law attorney. She receives judicial and peer recognition as a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney. Donna has been recognized by the Daily Record as a 100 Top Women and as a Leader in Law. She was honored with a Leaders & Legends award by the Montgomery County Chapter of the Women's Bar Association of Maryland at their inaugural event. The Montgomery County Bar Association recently awarded her with a Honorary Life Bar Leader.

A true believer in service, Donna is active in professionals associations and mentoring of others. Her relationship with colleagues, as a result of her involvement, is instrumental in representing her clients. Her knowledge of fellow colleagues and members of the bench is useful in negotiations, settlements, and litigation. She is currently involved with the Montgomery County Bar Association, Montgomery County Women’s Bar Association, and the Montgomery County Inns of Court. She is president of the Montgomery County Women’s Bar Foundation. Donna also lectures on topics of family law.

Donna treasures time with her husband and two adult children. They regularly spend time together, loving to travel and explore new adventures. Donna also enjoys meals, outings, parties, and social events with family and friends.
