William A. Goldberg

William Goldberg is a litigation attorney at Lerch, Early & Brewer in Bethesda, Maryland. Known as an energetic litigator, he is a tireless advocate for companies and individuals facing a variety of complex commercial disputes including breach of fiduciary duty claims, contractual disputes, business torts, trade secrets and partnership dissolutions.

Business owners, individuals, corporations, community associations and professionals rely on Bill’s sound, practical legal advice. His clients benefit from his unwavering commitment to finding solutions for tough problems through creativity and perseverance.

Bill’s broad litigation practice includes significant trial and appellate experience in the state and federal court system and the representation of clients in alternative dispute resolution. He frequently represents community associations in lawsuits involving free speech issues and the interpretation of governing documents.

Bill received his Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. and his Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Before joining Lerch Early, Bill practiced complex commercial and intellectual property litigation at a large Washington, D.C., law firm. His practice also included First Amendment litigation and counseling, including defamation and pre-publication review. Bill is admitted to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia and several federal courts.

Maryland Super Lawyers magazine has repeatedly named Bill one of Maryland's  "Rising Stars" in the field of Business Litigation.

Bill, who is originally from Long Island, and his wife enjoy traveling and spending time with their twin boys. Bill also enjoys tennis, golf, photography and hiking national parks in the western United States.

Representative Matters

Litigation (General Commercial):

  • Represented the former executive producer of a nationally known television program in a breach of contract action relating to ownership interest in a Washington, D.C. museum. 
  • Represented a board member of an international flavoring company against claims of misappropriation and breach of fiduciary duty; obtained summary judgment against plaintiff in the U.S. District Court, which was affirmed by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Litigation (Community Associations):

  • Represented the board of directors of Maryland’s largest cooperative housing corporation against shareholder claims of breach of fiduciary duty in a two-day bench trial. Prevailed before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, which affirmed the trial court verdict.
  • Represented the board of directors of a large homeowners’ association in defamation action in a three-day jury trial and obtained a favorable verdict, and before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, which affirmed the verdict in a published opinion.

Litigation (Trusts & Estates):

  • Represented client in complicated trust litigation and obtained favorable settlement  weeks after filing complaint for misrepresentation and before any discovery was taken.
