Mr. Alpuche chairs the firm's Business and Taxation Group. He was born in 1963 and received his Bachelors of Accountancy from The George Washington University School of Government & Business Administration in 1985. He received his J.D., with honors, from The National Law Center at The George Washington University in 1988. Mr. Alpuche also received a Masters of Law in Taxation from New York University in 1991. He is a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.
As part of his practice, Mr. Alpuche provides business and tax counseling to a wide range of clients. His business practice consists of assisting individuals and businesses making decisions with respect to entity organizational issues, buy-sell agreements and operating agreements and other contractual relationships. He develops and implements legal strategies for growing and mature companies with an emphasis on the tax issues associated with acquisitions and dispositions. His clients include professional service organizations, real estate developers and investors, manufacturers and retailers.
Mr. Alpuche has successfully represented individuals and businesses with tax issues before the Internal Revenue Service and various state and local taxing authorities. As part of his tax controversy practice, he regularly counsels clients in all aspects of the tax assessment and collections process. This includes representation in trust fund penalty assessments, examination and appeals, and counseling clients through the Offer in Compromise process, installment agreements, collections due process hearings, requests to abate penalties and lien releases and discharges.
As part of his tax planning practice, Mr. Alpuche also regularly advises non-profit organizations in applying for tax-exempt status, adopting conflict of interest policies and planning transactions to comply with the intermediate sanction rules.
Mr. Alpuche served as the supervising attorney of the University of Maryland School of Law Qualified Federal Low Income Taxpayer Clinic from June of 2000 through May of 2006.
