Mimi Magyar is a principal in the firm’s Family Law group. She assists her clients in the areas of divorce, separation agreements, prenuptial agreements, domestic partnership agreements and domestic adoptions. Mimi is a skilled litigator with years of trial experience in the divorce and custody arena. Nevertheless, when appropriate, she helps clients explore alternatives to costly litigation and a “take no prisoners” approach, which can have a lifetime of ramifications. She is skilled in alternative dispute resolution options like mediation and the collaborative process, and is certified in both. Mimi helps clients set goals and to make decisions that help them rise above the pure emotion of their experiences.
Mimi also has a strong desire to help children. In the context of divorce and custody, Mimi accepts appointments from the Court and private attorneys to act as a Best Interest Attorney, representing children in high conflict cases involving their parents. This also manifests itself in the adoption area, where she has helped dozens of families navigate the domestic adoption process.
A growing number of individuals are seeking to address their rights and responsibilities in the context of an upcoming marriage, as well as when entering into a domestic partnership. In the past, these agreements seemed to be reserved solely for a client who was seeking to protect his or her assets in a situation where the individuals had disparate financial circumstances. However, given the growing prevalence of second marriages and individuals who may not solemnize their relationship formally, there is a much larger spectrum of clients exploring these agreements. In this context, Mimi facilitates discussions like how obligations from a first marriage may affect a second marriage, how the couple may allocate their assets and the effect of prenuptial and domestic partnership agreements on estate planning.
“I became a family lawyer because I care about people,” says Mimi. “I see people at their most emotional, and I like to help them succeed as they enter new phases of their lives.”
Mimi received her B.A. in Criminal Justice from American University and her law degree from The George Washington University. She is involved in the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Maryland, and is a long-standing member of the Family Law Section. She is an active member of the Women’s Bar Associations of both the State of Maryland and Montgomery County. Mimi has served on community service committees, such as the Judicial Selection Committee, Minority Outreach Committee and the Lawyer to Lawyer Committee, which seeks to help attorneys with various emotional and physical problems. She also has served as Secretary of the Bar Association for Montgomery County and received recognition as a Bar Leader of the Montgomery County, Maryland Bar Foundation for her outstanding service to the profession and to the community. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of that Foundation.
Mimi also is a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Collaborative Dispute Resolution Professionals and the D.C. Academy of Collaborative Professionals.
When not helping clients navigate family issues, Mimi enjoys activities like walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 Mile Walk for the Cure, golfing, snow boarding and enjoying art.
Mimi is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She is listed in the 2011 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the field of Family Law, and she recently was named a “Rising Star” in Family Law by Maryland Super Lawyers magazine.
